I’m extending my information diet. I already stopped following The News about a year ago and from now on I’m won’t open my email before 12:00. I’m also putting my Tumblr account on hold, since it’s distracting me from the things that are more important to me.

Render PDFs in HTML5 →
Mozilla is working on technology that will allow PDF documents to be rendered within the browser, rather than utilizing a browser plug-in or an external app to open them. On his blog, Mozilla researcher Andreas Gal has described the project to build a PDF reader in HTML5 and JavaScript.

Project Spartan: Facebook’s Plan To Take On Apple →
A lot of initial shock value in this article, as it seems it will pit the two tech giants against each other. When you think about it though, most apps will go the way of HTML5 eventually anyway. Even last week, Microsoft announced that the next Windows developer platform will be based on HTML5.  It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to Facebook’s attempt to loosen their stranglehold...

JavaScript is faster than ActionScript →
Arnaud Gatouillat of iq12 ported the Google V8 Benchmark to ActionScript to compare its performance with JavaScript in modern browsers. It’s not really a surprise to see that JavaScript performs better than ActionScript these days. All browsers are continuously upgrading their JavaScript engine while the Flash Player performance is almost the same as a couple of years ago. Will the new...

Fast MySQL requires lots of memory →
The MySQL Performance Blog has an article about if it’s better to upgrade a MySQL database with SSD or RAM memory. I found another aspect of this article much more interesting. If you want the best performing MySQL database, make sure that the RAM memory exceeds the data inside the database. Thanks to Cody Faust and Willem van Bergen.

My first route on Bikemap
I cycled together with Michael today and put our ride up on Bikemap. Looks like it’s a useful site. I like the map, but I don’t really like the widget. Too bad you can’t customize it a bit more.

Great Examples of Eye Tracking Studies for Blogs... →
See where people look on popular websites. It’s interesting to see if others look where you first look and to consider why. It can be difficult to direct people’s gaze to the items you want but it is something that should always be considered during the design process. (thanks @jaredbrown)

So is it fair to conclude that if you are building web applications, then you can safely ignore multi-core CPU rants? […] Yeah, I think so.

Notably they do all their own designs including art, icons, and interfaces for other high-profile clients (Mozilla, Tom Tom, etc). Not surprisingly, the team will be joining Facebook’s design team. 5 Reasons Why E-Books Aren’t There Yet →
An unfinished e-book isn’t a constant reminder to finish reading it. You can’t keep your books all in one place. Notes in the margins help you think. E-books are positioned as disposable, but aren’t priced that way. E-books can’t be used for interior design.

Why Windows 8 Is fundamentally flawed →
But I think it’s a fundamentally flawed idea for Microsoft to build their next-generation OS and interface on top of the existing Windows. The idea is that you get the new stuff right alongside Windows as we know it. Microsoft is obviously trying to learn from Apple, but they clearly don’t understand why the iPad runs iOS, and not Mac OS X.
